Athlete’s Foot: Causes, Symptoms, And Treatment

Athlete’s Foot (Tinea Pedis) is a contagious fungal infection that often occurs to people with sweaty feet or those who wear tight-fitting shoes. Athletes who wear hot and sweaty athletic shoes are the most common targets, which is why it is commonly known as ‘Athlete’s’ Foot.

Usually, the infection first appears between the toes and slowly spreads like a rash to other parts of the feet. It can even infect and cause discoloration of the toenails. Though Athlete’s Foot is not a severe foot condition, it is hard to cure. It can be a serious concern for people who have diabetes or a weaker immune system.

Causes
Athlete’s Foot is mainly caused by various fungi that belong to a group called dermatophytes—the group also causes jock itch and ringworm. This type of fungi thrive in warm and moist environments and feed on keratin, which is a protein found in our nails, hair, and skin.

These fungi harmlessly survive on human skin, but their reproduction is limited on dry and clean skin. They tend to multiply at a rapid rate in damp conditions. Therefore, thick and tight shoes that cause excessive sweating, especially between the toes, become ideal for them to breed.

This contagious infection can spread through direct or indirect contact. When an uninfected person directly touches an infected person’s affected area, they can develop Athlete’s Foot. In terms of indirect contact, this infection can occur when a healthy person touches contaminated surfaces, clothes, sheets, and towels.

Symptoms
A person suffering from Athlete’s Foot may experience itching in the affected area along with a stinging and burning sensation. Their skin may also become flaky, dry, red, or scaly. In extreme cases, the skin can crack, and there may be oozing, swelling as well as itchy blisters.

If this fungal infection is left untreated, it may spread from toe to toe. Gradually, rashes may develop on the sides and the bottom of the feet. Sometimes, the infection can also spread to the hands (Tinea Manuum.)

Treatment
When the symptoms of Athlete’s Foot are mild, patients usually resort to over-the-counter (OTC) medications, and they effectively resolve the issue and treat the infection. In other cases, the doctors prescribe antifungal medications that require oral consumption and a topical application. The remedies range from tablets and powders to sprays and creams.

Apart from this, patients are also taught some at-home hygiene to prevent and treat the infection. People suffering from Athlete’s Foot should frequently wash their feet with soap and water. They can even soak their feet in salt water or diluted vinegar to clear up blisters.

Keeping the feet dry is another most important step to treat Athlete’s Foot. To keep the feet dry, you should often change shoes and socks and only purchase cotton socks as they absorb moisture. Lastly, regularly wash your towels and never share them with anyone.
